GO AND  SIN NO MORE                  By   Phil Guerena Sr.

Go and sin no more were amazing words spoken by Jesus Christ.  They were directed at a woman caught in a trap of adultery so that she would be condemned by Jesus Christ Himself.  The religious leaders of the day made many attempts to righteously or otherwise blame Jesus Christ of anything and everything.   One dilemma that they threw at Him was paying taxes or paying the tithe that the Bible commanded.  If you only obey one you would be guilty of disobeying the other, so they thought.  The religious leaders first praised Jesus as being honest and righteous.   Then they asked Him, deceitfully, which was correct, to pay Caesar, the government, or the church.   He asked to see a coin called a denarius.   He inquired whose image was on the coin; they replied, “Caesar’s.”  Then He concluded, “give unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s and unto God that which is God’s.”  Both must be obeyed.
In this case of the adulterous woman, only the woman was brought to him; but the law demanded equal justice both for the man and for the woman.  But Jesus went along with them.  The Law of Moses said that both should be stoned.  But since life was under the Roman Empire, no death sentences could be given except by the Romans.  But they were ready to stone this woman and give Jesus the credit for sentencing this person to death.
But the Lord did something very unexpected.  He stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger.  The accusers insisted that Moses in the Law was commanded to stone her.  Then He said: “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.”   All of them heard this, and were convicted by their conscience left one by one, from the oldest to the youngest.   Then He turned to the woman and asked, “Where are your accusers, has no one condemned you.”   She said not one, Lord.  He responded, “Neither do I condemn you.  Go and sin no more.”   Whatever He wrote on the ground convinced them all that they were guilty sinners before God and His Law.  He could easily forgive her because He was going to die for her and all sinners who would accept Him and His free gift of Salvation.
This woman became one of the pillars of the early Christian church, Mary Magdalene.  It seems that she was the one who anointed the feet of Jesus with an expensive perfume.  It was estimated that the amount which she was using was worth around ten thousand dollars.  Also she was one of the ladies who went seeking the body of Jesus to again anoint Him.  But they found an empty grave with the news, He is risen!  Jesus is alive and risen from the dead.  She saw Him and even talked with Him.  Since being personally freed by God from condemnation, she chose to be a faithful disciple for life.
The command given to her by Jesus is simple and very clear.  You are forgiven for your sinful life and behavior.  Go and do not allow yourself to be enslaved by its gripping power anymore.  Follow me and serve me.  The Bible says that many wealthy women gave money to Jesus and His disciples to help them in their ministry.  She was probably one of them.  Go and Sin no more is a beautiful, gentle and powerful demand that is given to all who would dare follow Him after He exposed one of being a great sinner.  Words from a hymn, There is a Fountain fits here.  The dying thief rejoiced to see that fountain in his day, and there may I though vile as he, wash all my sins away.  GO AND SIN NO MORE
